Week ?

Hi All,

We're heading back more local this week, as a major announcement was released this morning from the White House. President Obama, announced that his Chief of Staff, Rahm Emanuel, would be stepping down to explore candidacy for the Mayor Chicago. Emanuel has made it very clear over the past decade that this would be his dream job, but always said he would never run against Mayor Daley. With Daley's decision not run, many have been waiting for Rahm to enter the race... well, as of today... he's in. Today's Blog asks you to explore a little bit more about Rahm and the position he'll be running for. Please read the time article, linked below, for initial background. List any other sources you use at the bottome of your entry.

  1. 1- The chief of staff is the highest ranking member of the Executive Office of the President of the United States and is also a senior aide to the president. The person who will replace him is still unknown, but whoever it is must be smart, responsible, and cautious with such a big job.
2- A mayor is the highest ranking officer in a municipal government of local town or large urban city.
3- Mayor Daley is stepping down because he feels that it is time to change his life and put the “working” part of life aside so he can spend more time with his family.
4- First off I would say that he is more then qualified for the position. For one, he has worked with the president. Next I would say that since he has worked at such a high level, being a mayor shouldn’t be as big of a struggle then his last job was.
5- So far, one of the newest people running for mayor of Chicago is a man named Gery Chico. Currently Gery is Chairman of the City College’s Board.
6- I would say that the person who should be mayor is Rahm Emanuel because of all the success he has had working as the president’s chief of staff.

  2. 1. What is the role of the President's Chief of Staff? And, who will replace Rahm Emanuel?

The Chief of Staff has been responsible for overseeing the actions of the White House staff, managing the president's schedule, and deciding who is allowed to meet with the president. Because of these duties, the Chief of Staff has at various times been labeled "The Gatekeeper", "The Power Behind the Throne", and "The Co-President". Pete Rouse poised to replace Rahm Emanuel
    2. What is the role of the mayor?
He oversees everything done in the city or town that he is mayor in. He is the highest power in that particular area.

    3. Why is Mayor Daley stepping down, and choosing not run for re-election?
He wants to turn over a new chapter in his life. He thinks that it is his time to step down and let Chicago move off.

    4. Provide a brief history of Rahm's experience that might qualify him to be mayor.
Rahm has done a fantastic job in the white house, and he is considered the second president, obviously this qualifies him for mayor, it’s almost a step down from his position. However, it is his dream job, so he is taking it.

    5. Who else is running for Mayor of Chicago?
Rahm Emanuel, Robert Fioretti, William Walls, Gery Chico, Rickey Hendon, Miguel Del Valle, Jay Stone, R. Emmett Tyrrell, Christopher C. Cooper, Fredrick K. White are all running for sure.

    6. Of these candidates, who do you believe is the most qualified? Why?
Obvious I think it’s Rahm Emanuel because he has been in the white house and has played one of the most powerful positions in the world. I think mayor would be a step down from what he does and he has a lot of respect among politicians.

  3. The chief of staff overlooks the entire staff of the white house. THe mayor is the highest ranking individual of the city government, has control over laws and other topics. Mayor Daley doesn't want to do it anymore. He says its time for him and chicago to move on. Rahm Emanuel is the chief of staff at the white house. He is from Chicago and he is trying to prove that he still loves the city of which he came from. Peter Rouse is also running for mayor. Peter Rouse seems more experienced than Rahm Emanuel, but Emanuel seems more of a likeble person.

    1. Rahm Emanuel’s job as Chief of Staff put him in charge of the executive branch. The Chief of Staff is the head of the executive branch and now that he is stepping down he needs to be replaced. Rahm Emmanuel is suspected to be replace by Pete Rouse on Friday at 11am.
    2. The role of mayor is to be the leader of the city and in this case it is Chicago.
    3. He is stepping down because he said it is his time and it is a personal decision.

  8. The role of the Presidents chief of staff helps the president. They really do everything behind the scenes and they do whatever needs to be done. Rahm Emanuel will be replaced by Pete Rouse. A mayor’s job is to keep a city running and help the city prevent dangers. Mayor Daley is choosing to step down from the re-election because he wants to be with his family as well as he has been mayor from many years. To qualify Rham as mayor he has already been in politics for awhile and has the experience with politics. Not only that’s but has been President Obama’s chief of staff. Also running for mayor of Chicago is James Houliha, and Sandy Jackson. I think the most qualified to become mayor would be Rahm Emanuel, just because it seems like he has much experienced out of all. But if I had to pick from the others I don’t think I could pick because I don’t know really anything about the other candidates.

The office-holder has been dubbed "The Second-Most Powerful Person in Washington". The role of the Chief of Staff has been responsible for overseeing the actions of the White House staff, managing the president's schedule, and deciding who is allowed to meet with the president. He also can fire city employees if they do not do their job correctly.
    3) Mayor Daley is not running as mayor this year because he thinks it is time for Chicago to move on. He stated that "In the end this is a personal decision, no more, no less." He has decided that it is time for a change and he needs to step down. He said that this would be best for Chicago.
    4) Rahm Emanuel served previously as senior advisor to President Clinton at the White House from 1993 to 1998. Emanuel was chair of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee during the 2006 mid-term elections and remained a top strategist for House Democrats during the 2008 cycle.
