NYT - Blog Post

Hi all,

For today, I would like you take the Article you chose from yesterday's NYT's article and answer the following questions:

1) Please explain the who, what, where, when, why of this article. For the why, please explain why the action or subject is doing something in the article - this may be applied differently depending on your article.

2) Why did you choose this article? What value does it have to you? What value would it provide to our class?

3) In reading your article, please list ALL words you did not know and define them (google has an online dictionary, or there are plenty of others online.

4) Do you have an opinion or reaction to the article that you read? How would you frame a discussion on this article to the class? What debatable issues or questions could we tie to this article? Please provide at least three questions, and how you would respond to them.

5) Was there any noticable bias to your article? If yes, do you think this bias is ok, or are they missing a key part of the story? If no, do you think there is ever a situation when a journalist can be bias?

6) Please find two other news articles describing the purpose of your article from other news sources. Please explain how the coverage of these articles was different to the NYT. For this, I am asking you to essentially look at the same story, just covered by a different news outlet, and then compare the differences. In the end, which source do you think did the best job, why?

(Make sure to provide the links - use google or google news to help located, also you can check CNN, FoxNews, BBC, Chicago Tribune)

  1. I read about the ongoing preesure rising in France due to high gas prices and other economical problems that the french may have at the moment. As the president of France, Nicholas Sarkozy vowed to "guarantee order" within France as more protests and strikes are happening under his ruling. I chose this article because it is about the economic stresses of a country other than ourselves. Beacuse I am suprised to see that a country as prosperous as France fall to pure barbaric and unreasanable methods in their time of economic hardship. I did not notice any bias in the article, however, I think they left out the citizens side of the story.

  2. Who- Students in New York
What- using textbooks instead of using the internet
    When- Recently, taking place now.
    Where- Clinton New York
Why- The students have been saying that although the extra weight of the bulky textbooks can be an annoyance, there is no chance of getting a virus, the screens won’t go blank, and it wouldn’t be the same without books. I chose this because part of me agrees with the fact that you don’t need a laptop or computer to get an education.
I chose this article because people back in the day never had laptops, look at all our presidents and how smart they were. They never had any technology only books. But the other half of me is saying that computers make life so much easier and maybe we can learn better with them. Also, yes, I would recommend this article to the class. My reaction to the article is that yes I think it’s a good idea to limit the time on the computer and that in some areas, it’s better to learn from the book. I would start a discussion on this article by asking the question, is it better to learn from computers or is it better to learn from books? No there was no bias.

The source that I believe did the best job was to NYT because how easy they made the article to read and how it was easily understood.

  3. 1) Who: the military and openly gays
What: the military is allowing openly gay and lesbian applicants
    Where: all over
    When: now
Why: because a federal judge in California ruled last month that the “don’t ask, don’t tell” law violates the equal protection and first amendment rights of service members.

    2) I chose this article because in the article we read about a week ago about how the people in Kansas were protesting at dead army men and women funerals because the military had gay people in it. So I read this to see how it would be affected.
    3) Moratorium: a suspension of activity: a moratorium on the testing of nuclear weapons.
Scrutiny: a searching examination or investigation; minute inquiry
    4) I think that the article is far and there should be no argument to it. Three questins to ask would be 1. Why are they just making this law now 2. Why is this such a big deal 3. How will this affect us.
    5) No there was no bias to this article. Yes journalism can be bias.

    1) Who: CIA, Al Quedia
What: Suicide bombing killing 7 CIA agents
    When: Last December
Why: An officer received information about an attack from Al Quedia to a CIA base in afganistan but failed to tell anyone about it.

2: It seemed very dissappointing to me, it does not have that much value to me, its just another story. It would probably not provide a value to the class because most of it is unknown.

    3) Litany: a ceremonial or liturgical form of prayer consisting of a series of invocations or supplications with responses that are the same for a number in succession.
    bona fides: Good faith; sincerity.

    4) Who knew about the threats of the bombing?
Several of the people that died.
Why didn’t they have a chain of command they report their information to?
    I do not know.
How did he get next to the building without being searched?
    Sloppy work.

    5) No, there wasn’t really two sides to the story. It was clear what happened and kind of why.

    6Three different articles:

I think that the ny times did the best because they didn’t have any bias in there article, the others tried to focus on one thing, like in the msn one, they focused on how everyones doing a good job and accidents happen some times. The India times went into more about the sucide bomber and his culture.

    Who: Women
    what: New Breast Cancer Links
    Where: Everywhere
    When: Since around 2002.
Why: They were taking horomones and they were not sure what the repercussions were, though some were ending up with Breast Cancer.
    2) I chose this articale because I have known several people thoughout my life who have head breast cancer, and they have had it more than once. I like knowing news on breast cancer because it helps me feel aware and shows how many people care and want to find a cure. I know I am not the only one in our class that has been affcted by breast cancer. There are ways to help fight against it and prevent it and this articale displays that.
    3) I honestly knew all the words, it was not a challenging articale to read.
4)I'm surprised that something such as, taking horomones, can be linked to breast cancer risks. If I had to make this into a discussion for the class, I would say something more general like, if things cause cancer, shouldn't we ban them? As this articale shows, you may not be fully aware of how it may be hurting you. I know there would be an argument to what I posed...
    1) If it causes cancer, why would you do it?
    - I'm not sure why anyone would want to do something that would give you a sickness that can potenyially end your life.
2)How should we know what causes cancer and what doesn't?
-They do studies in labs for a reason, and everyday I'm sure they come up woth something new that may increase the risk of getting some kind of cancer.
3)What if you do the right amount?
-There is no right amount for something that causes cancer.

5)There wasn't much that could be bias about my articale only because it is factual information. It is an informative articale, to let you know what a study shows. I believe there are plenty of opportunities for a journalist to be bias, by all means.

I chose this article because I believe that textbooks are better than the internet. Textbooks may be heavy and hard to carry around but they are better for learing than the internet.
Would textbooks be more expensive than supplying the internet to students?
How often does a school have to buy new textbooks?
How many schools prefer textbooks over the internet?
I think textbooks are better than the internet because they wont hurt your eyes and they will never crash.

  8. 1 )Who: Joshua Komisarjevsky, Steven J. Hayes, Dr. William A. Petit Jr.
What: Josh Komisarjevsky is reading out of his journal from when he is in jail. This explains everything that happened when he and Steven killed the three girls in the Petit family in Connecticut.
    Where: New Haven, Connecticut
When: He read off his journal on October 5, 2010
Why: He is reading off his journal because he wants to justify the real story and hope that it does not result in a death penalty.
    2) I chose this article because we already discussed it as a class, but never actually got to find out what the murderers had to say about it. Also, I thought that it would be interesting to hear his side of the story and how he had to defend himself.
    3) grandiose: imposing in conception or execution
pontificated: to speak in a pompous or dogmatic manner
    4) Well my reaction to this is that it is very disturbing what they did to the family. I believe that no one should go through what the Petit family had and has to go through. The two murderers raped and killed three girls, two being under the age of 18.
    Questions:
-What would make someone want to do something like this? In the article it said that he wanted to feel powerful, but to me that still isn't enough motivation to kill other people.
-According to Komisarjevsky, he did this also because he has never been able to get over the fact that he was raped and abused growing up. He explained the pain he went through every day. Why would someone want to put other people through the same pain when he already experienced how bad it is? I think that he did that so he doesn't feel like the only one, and he has so much hatred inside him the built up.
-Why did they choose this family? It never said that the murderers and the victims knew each other, and it doesn't seem like they do. I'm guessing that they chose them because this family had a lot of money, because they killed the mom when the bank wouldn't allow her to take out as much money as the two men were asking for.
    5) The article itself wasn’t necessarily bias, but the story of Komisarjevsky was. He only told his side of his story, and blamed a lot of it on Hayes. They never gave Hayes the opportunity to tell his side of the story. But since they have two different trial days, Hayes will get his time to explain his side of the story.

  10. 1. Who??
An Officer named Jordanian, and C.I.A Members
    What?
An officer who didn’t warn the C.I.A members about an attack and a Jordanian doctor detonated a suicide vest as he stood in front of the members
    Where?
    In Eastern Afghanistan
    Why?
Supposably he was a double agent and was also working for the Al Qaeda. An officer received warning but didn’t tell anybody.
    2. I choose the article because ever since obama made the new plan about bringing in our troops more people have been dying a lil bit more often.
    3. Litany = A series of petitions for use in church services, usually recited by the clergy and responded to in a recurring formula by the people.
    Murky = Dark and Gloomy
    4. Umm well im just surprised that this dude didn’t even say anything to his own guys you know but idk that’s on him.
    5. Naw there wasn’t any bias on this article…I mean not that I know of.

The U.S is now letting gay men and lesbian women to join the fighting forces. This past month president Obama has gotten rid of the “don’t ask don’t tell” policy and has now made it legal to serve and be gay or lesbian. This debate has been going on for years so for it to finally be passed it is a big topic in the U.S right now.
I chose this article because it was a shocker to me that after so long they had finally legalized it. I don’t think I have much value to this but I think as a class and a school it means a lot. Everyone has different views so it will be interesting to see how people react to this.
    1. Moratorium- a suspension of activity.
    2. Disintegrate- to separate into parts or to lose intactness or solidness.
I do not support the gay community but that does not mean I don’t support this law. I think they should be able to fight for their country and it shouldn’t matter if their gay or not. If I brought this up in class I would ask the q1uestion if people agreed or disagreed on it.
    THREE Q
There was no sign of bias in this article. This article could have turned out to be really bias but it did not.

  12. 1. The United States military is now recruiting openly gay and lesbian people for the first time ever. The law is called don’t ask don’t tell. This was ruled last month. President Obama said the don’t ask don’t tell will end, and it will end on my watch. The new instructions were given to the recruiters so the can handle the situation.
    2. The reason I choose this article is because in class like a week ago we were talking about something similar to this. How people though the gay people have no right in the military. Which I think is wrong. I think if people want to serve our country then let them, why would you turn someone down who wants to do something good to help others and our freedom
    3. Prominent - standing out so as to be seen easily
    4. Do you support what they are doing? I say yes because I believe that everyone should be treated equally. What do you think about what President Obama said? I think that it was awful because he is the President. He is countries role model and for him to be saying that is just wrong. Do you know anyone in the military, if so do you think they would agree with this? I don’t know anyone in the military.
    5. Yes people were kind leaning to not having gay people in the military. I think it is not okay and they are missing the side of the story were the gay people who want to join the military not just the other people.

  13. Article: Britain announces severe military cutbacks
1.This article is about Britain government cutting back on their military supplies like tanks and artillery by 40 percent. Also 10 percent of the military cut backs are personal cutbacks. The government also wants to take all of their troops from Germany within the next 10 years.
2.I choose this article because I thought it was interesting how they want to take out troops from Germany. I also wanted to know why they are cutting back on supplies. This article proves that countries have to cut back on things because of the economy.
    3.Austerity-an ascetic practice
4.Once I first read this article I was shocked that any country would have cut backs on your military. I think the military is one of the most important things to have, and it insures that everyone will be protected. Even though 10 and 40 percent on cutbacks might not seem like a lot well it does add up. If the US was doing this to our military would anyone be scared? What could happen one we take all troops out in another country?
5.In this article there wasn’t any bias, but I do think journalist can be bias on many articles if they don’t really have an opinion on the topic.

Both of these news articles give information on what they are cutting back and how much. But it seems like the first article had the most information. It had a lot of detail on what was getting cutback and the amounts. All of these articles are good but, I think the better one was the first article I found online.

  15. The article I read was about the riots in France about the government raising the retirement age from 62-65 and the pension age from 65-67. People are rioting in the streets of France boycotting and striking, it first started when the gas at the gas stations ran out of gas. People started to riot because they couldn’t get to work or go on their weekend trips. I chose this article because I heard about the riots in France on the news and I was interested in learning more about it. It has value to me because I can see what’s going on around the world. It world provide the class an opportunity to learn more about what’s going on in this world. There were no words that I didn’t really understand in the article, it was pretty straight forward. My opinion to this article is that I think that the people in France are just looking for a reason to go on a riot because there is always something going wrong with that country. Most people in France don’t work more than 8 hour workdays including lunch and yet they’re made because they have to work an extra 3 years? I think it’s just because they’re lazy. They’re also mad because there’s no gas. Well if they want gas so bad maybe they should stop boycotting the oil companies and let them get the oil. A few questions I have is why can’t the government get them under control? They’re so much better equipped for situations like these and yet they can’t control their people? Why can’t the people just accept that they have to work another 2-3 years? There was some bias in this article because no one was covering the people’s side of the story. It was only taken from the standpoint of the government. I think it’s okay since most of the people who are rioting are radicals and are rioting just because they can.

In my article, the Haitian presidant confirmed that there is a cholera epidemic in Haiti. The epidemic is the worst disaster since the earthquake in January. The breakout has effected over 1,500 people and killed at least 140. Cholera usually comes from consuming water or food contaminated by cholera bacteria and but doesn’t spread from person to person. The reason that the epidemic is spreading through Haiti is because of the weakend state since the earthquake. I chose this article because Haiti had that huge earthquake in January that killed over 300,000 and they have been in poverty and bad luck since. This article provides value to us because we could all pitch in and donate money to Haiti. The only word I didn’t know was intravenous and it simply mean IV in large veins. My opinion to this article is that we should be doing more to stabilize the situation in Haiti. We could discuss other ways to help Haiti and ways to prevent the disease from spreading. Lastly, we could raise awareness on what’s going on in poorer countries. I don’t think there is any bias in this article. There is many situations when a journalist can be biased like when an American journalist is covering a story in Iraq or a rival country. I believe the NY times did the best job because they got most of the facts and only included the parts that were most important.

    1) I choose this article because I think that gays should be able to speak out. I know some one that is and you can tell but people aren’t embrassed of him.
    2) I think that obama was right about the don’t ask, don’t tell law and it will go away soon. But then agin he is wrong because people shoule be able to aspeak there mind with out be looked down on.
    3) Why is he waiting until now because he he cshould of done something about it before. He should get take out this law. Let them decied what to do.
    4) No not any

  23. 1.Who: military and their opposing on gay people in the military, or opens to let them in
What: the military is opening applications to gay people
    Where: worldwide
    When: 2010
Why: everyone should be able to join the army and there should be no “ifs” and because a federal judge in California ruled last month that the “don’t ask, don’t tell” law violates the equal protection and first amendment rights of service members.
    2) I chose this article because a while ago we were opposing to letting gays to fight for our country, but I think gays are able to because the government just wants to be the best and they don’t care who dies.
    3) Salvo…The firing of many guns at the same time to mark an occasion
    4) I think this article is interesting but I would love to find more information about it like..1. Why is this law being passed when a couple of months we were against it 2. How are gays different from others 3.Why is it important what your sexual orientation is? 4. How will this affect the country, and other countries?
    5) No there was no bias to this article, because there are many sides to this article. Yes journalism can be bias because there are many ideas and facts and people believe what they want to.

Anita replied by saying “ and one can imagine that she is guided by her own romantic interest in her husband when she assumes that other women find him attractive as well”

  25. Who? P.S. 127 in New York

What? New method of teaching the curriculum

    When? Now

Why? They say it is an improved way of doing things. It is controversial because of the variables.

I chose this article because I think that education is important and if there is a way of improving it, I think that we should try it.

    No unknown words.

I think that it is a good debate topic but to people with kids, however it affects us and any future children but im not sure it would be a topic of interest to a lot of 15 and 16 yr olds

1 would you try this new way of learning? Do you think it works? What would you do to improve it?
I don’t think it was bias. I think that when it comes to making our country look better journalists are bias

    Found none

  26. 1) Some of the negotiations took place in Kabul. Early 2010, a commander of NATO forces asked the Obama administration to declare the Haqqani network an organization of terrorism.
    2) I choose the article “High-Level Afghan Talks Seek an End to the War” because the Afghan War is an event that should be over. The article gives a little hope that the war will end.
    3) Substantive-It mean real. Reconcile-To make an agreement.
    4) I was little excited to read this article. I would ask other people what they think about this article. Do you think both countries had a good reason to fight this war? Who do you think should win the war? When do you think the war will end? I think both countries should not fight. I do not think it is important that America wins or loses the war. I think the war will end in August 2011.
    5) There is a quote in the article that stated, “This is not about making the Americans happy or making Karzai happy. It’s about what is in the best interest of the Afghan people”. The missing key part is that the Afghan people are not the only ones who are important.

  27. 1)
    a.       Who: French leader President Nicolas Sarkozy and protesters.
    b.      What: French citizens are protesting.
    c.       Where: It is happening in France.
    d.      When: October 20, 2010
    e.      Why: Due to the rise in taxes and prices on oil.
    2)      I choose this article because it explains our dependences on oil what will happen when we run out; its value to the class is that it shows why we should find a renewable resource.
    3)      Abhorrence: a feeling of extreme repugnance or aversion
    4)      I was surprised to hear that people are doing violence protests because of high taxes. If I share this to the class I would say that the problem in France is bad and we, as Americans, should find a way so this does not happen to us. How is the world dependent on oil? Why should taxes not go so high? What are some examples that the protesters are doing? The world is dependent on oil because it is the only fuel source and it is too expensive to change to another resource. Taxes cannot go so high because then people will get angry and protest like in France. Some things that the protesters are doing are called the snail protest, it is when people get into their car and drive slow or block the roads.
    5)      There is no bias in the article, a journalist is bias when he is covering a war because they cannot walk up to the enemy and ask their side of the story.
    6)
          http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-11559265
The article tells what the protesters are saying and the what the people are saying.
    http://articles.cnn.com/2010-10-22/world/france.strikes_1_pension-reform-french-riot-police-retirement-reform?_s=PM:WORLD
This article explains what the Senate voted on and what the protesters are doing.
I think that the BBC did the best job because it had the most amount of information.
