Week 5 - H20 ... Ut Oh

For today, I would like you to use the following website to calculate and list your daily, monthly, and yearl water usage. (Click on Detailed Summary at the end)

http://www.h2oconserve.org/home.php?pd=index

Next, upon finishing your calculation, please write a 3-5 sentence reaction to your results. Are you suprised? What questions do you have? General reactions?

Lastly, I would like you to find two outside resources that explain ways to reduce your water-footprint. Please include links to your resource and a list and explanation (complete sentences) of 5 ways to reduce your water use in your daily life.

Due: Monday at 12AM
When Finished: Please go to http://www.ecocentrism.org and explore the website - they have some really interesting articles written on water conservation and creative solutions for sustainability.

  1. After I finished the survey, I was really surprised. I would have never thought that one household can use almost 6000 gallons of water per day. This goes to show how lucky we are that w have this much water, people would die for this much water per day and I think we need to start recognizing how much we use a day and maybe cut down a little bit.
    Daily- 1,153 gallons
    Monthly- 34,590 gallons
    Yearly- 420,845 gallons

1- By reducing the amount of time in the shower you can cut downon your water usage.
2- If you buy low-flow shower heads you can also cut down on usage.
3- By drinking less bottled you can help save water.
4- By car-pooling, you can save more water and gasoline per day.
5- You can save more then 10 gallons of water a day by not washing your car as much.

  2. Your individual water use is 1,232.04 gallons per day.
My individual water use in a month is 36961.2 gallons.
My individual water use in a year is 449694.6 gallons.
I figured that the number would be high but not this high. I don’t think a cpmputer website can really accurately determine the number of gallons of water you use. I do not think that this is accurate but I do use a lot of water in my daily life.

1: Fix any leaky pipes in my house.
2: Cut some water down in my morning routine by using a timer.
3: Take my car to the car wash, not do it myself.
4: Stop water in shower to use soap then rinse off after.
    5: Don’t water my lawn.

I was very surprised at my results. I could not believe that so many people use this much water. If we all are using all this water, how long will it be before we use it all? If the population is growing rapidly then there will be twice as many people using this much water and we will run out even faster, what will we do then?

I was pretty surprised when I found out that I use more water than the average American. I thought I was good at conserving water, but I guess I’m not. How much of this water is being reused?
    1) Install a water-saving shower head to limit the water you need to wash yourself.
    2) Put a water bottle with pebbles in your toilet tank to reduce the water used when you flush your toilet.
    3) Drive a hybrid to reduce the use of gas.
    4) Don’t water your lawn when it’s windy.
    5) Use a grey water system to water your plants and lawn.

  5. Overall I am suprised at my results. I use 1,098.74 gallons a day, 32,926.2 a month, and finally 397,755.1 a year. Although I save more water than the average american, I still want to change my ways and save more water. My main question is the fact that why some people think it is hard to save water? www.naturesvoice-ourchoice.org
    www.wateruseitwisely.com/100-ways-to-conserve/index.php

The first thing you can do is to simply use less water. Next you can use water conserving shower heads, toilets, and sinks. Then you can do the laundry and dishes only when they are full. You can also take showers only when you really need to. And finally, you can encourage others to do the same.

I was actually really shocked that these are my results. I never thought that my family and I could use so much water! When you are using the water you aren’t aware of the amount your using. I for one can say that I let the water run way longer then it probably should and I am no help to our water problems.

    4)Use a graywater system
5)Drop your tissue in the trash instead of flushing it and save water every time.

  7. I was surprised by how fast water is swallowed up, in just one day I use 1,161.72 gallons of water, in just one week I use 8132.04 gallons, in one I use 34851.6 gallons of water, and in one whole year I use 424,027.8 gallons of water. I was very surprised with my result; I didn’t expect all the water I use in one day to add up to such a high amount. It makes me wonder how much water the whole world uses in a year, and how there could be precautions to saving water. One thing that could be a simple way to save water would be, capturing the rain. Just like the Romans, When the Romans would have openings in there roof to capture water into a small pool. It would be ideal to do something like this, something like a rain catcher, like a small pool in the ground to catch water, or maybe a funnel that can lead into homes.

    http://www.americanwater.com/49ways.php
These sources have some simple everyday tasks that could take maybe a minute just to save water, like brushing teeth with the water on, threes plenty of water being wasted in that.
    http://eartheasy.com/live_water_saving.htm
Check for leaks all you have to do is read the house water meter before and after when no water is used, and if the meter is not the same there is a leak.

i never though of how much water i use a day and when i saw my numbers i was so suprised. Most of water i use is important because it is in daily rountie.i would like to try to cut back on the amount of water i use.By the things i list below.

    http://eartheasy.com/live_water_saving.htm
    http://www.wateruseitwisely.com/100-ways-to-conserve/index.php
1.use a broom to clean your drive way instead of water
2.collect water from you roof to use for your garden
3.wash your fruits and vegatabels in pan instead of running water
4.shorten your showeres by a minute or two
5.turn off water when you are brushing your teeth

  9. Well umm yea I was kind of surprised. I never that many gallons of water would be used even by an individual person. But I did know that if more people live in the household then more gallons of water would be used. But only 1 question…would we be using other people’s water and stuff like that? Like for example….if I flush the toilet would someone else be using that kind of water I just flushed??
One way I can reduce water is by reducing the time I take in the shower and turning off the faucet when I brush my teeth. Well not myself but my my family as well. And the second thing that I would have to do (and my family)is to make sure there aren’t any leaks in any of the sinks and or toilets. http://www.wateruseitwisely.com/100-ways-to-conserve/index.php
And on last thing I can do with the fam is only use the dishwasher and cloths washer when the stuff is completely full…

I never really thought of all of the different ways that I use water, and how much I use it. My results were a lot higher than I expected them to be. Most of my daily routine consists of water, so now I can see how I use so much. I would like to find ways to cut back on my family's usage of water

    http://eartheasy.com/live_water_saving.htm
    http://www.wateruseitwisely.com/100-ways-to-conserve/index.php

One way that I can reduce water is when I am brushing my teeth or washing my hands to not let the water run. Instead I should turn it off while I'm brushing my teeth so that I don't waste water. Also, my parents can make sure that no pipes have leaks in them. By just shortening my shower by one minute, I can save up to 150 gallons of water per month. We can collet rain water on our roof so that we can water our garden with that water instead of water from the hose. Lastly, when we water our lawn, make sure that all the water gets on the lawn instead of on the sidewalks or driveways.

I was shocked to see how much water I use per day. That is so much water that could be used to help others in other countries. I can’t believe how many gallons of water are used. I know now that I could definitely reduce that number if I try.
http://edition.cnn.com/2008/TECH/10/03/eco.water.hoekstra/index.html The first article is about how many litters of water it takes just to make simple things like 1 cup of coffee; it takes 140 liters of water. But to reduce water you have to become water neutral that’s means only use water when needed. http://www.suite101.com/content/ways-to-reduce-water-usage-a110585 The second article has many ways to reducing water usage like don’t rinse your car with a hose instead use a bucket. Only do the laundry when there is a full load, take a shower instead of a bath and collect rain in a barrel to use for a garden.

I did not expect to use that much water daily alone. I did not realize that little things like leaving water on or a long shower could waste so much water. I think it’s a good thing for people to find this out so they may try to change or cut down.
You can reduce how much water you use every day by changing simple things. Some things are let it mellow, turn water of while you brush your teeth, and take not as long showers.

My monthly water usage is 35,816.1
My yearly water usage is 436,492.55]
When I realized how much water I use a DAY I was so shocked! Now I want to cut back on how much water I use because I don’t think that it is really necessary to use all that water. It’s astonishing to see how much water you waste on the little things and to see how much your whole family uses, I just want to tell my parents “Hey we need to cut back on how much water we use.” I am in aw over how much water we use. I don’t even know what to say because I had never realized how much that was used.

    2) http://www.treehugger.com/files/2007/09/conserve_water.php
We can reduce our water uses by taking shorter showers and using less water pressure. We can conserve water by filling a jug of water and putting it in the fridge for a cool drink later. Many of us may also decide to turn off the tap when you are brushing your teeth instead of letting it run the whole time you are brushing your teeth. We can sweep our drive ways instead of watering down our drive ways. We may also decide to put out rain barrel to collect water from our roof's downspout to irrigate our gardens. There is so much more that we can do we just have to try harder then what we are doing at the moment which is really basically nothing.

When I saw how much water I use I felt bad, like I thought I cut down, but I guess I didn’t and I feel bad that I use that much water in general. I’m going to start to not use our water usage so much anymore. When I saw the number of how much I use daily, monthly, and yearly, I was shocked. I never even knew we use THAT much. I guess I never thought about the water usage my family uses until this class, so now that I know much I use, imp going to cut back, a lot. I’m completely surprised that I use that much water. It definitely took me by surprise. How can I cut down on how much water I use all around? How can I still wash my dishes and clothes without harming how much water I use? My general action was shocked, surprised, lost for words, speechless all around.

5 Things I can do to cut down on my water usage
1- Not take such long time in my showers, like take quick showers instead of 30 minute showers
2- Carpooling- you can get a ride from friends or pick up your friends if you’re going to the same place it saves gas.
3- Don’t water my lawn anymore
4- Don’t wash my car myself, take it to the gas station to have them do it for me
5- Not drink as much bottled water as I do now

Yes I was completely shocked and surprised by the amounts of water I used a day alone then I looked at monthly and yearly and it pretty much took my breathe away at the results. I didn’t know that one person alone was responsible for using that much water of gallons a day and that people aren’t een aware about hom much they are using. I think ifI was to go home and tell my family how much water I use a day they would be absolutely shocked. My closing reaction would be that how can one person use that much gallons of water a day?
    1. To cut down on the amount of water usage we can take less time in the shower.

You could save water by installing water saving toilets, applying a water-saving showerhead, closing the tap during teeth brushing, using less water in the garden and by not disposing medicines, paints or other pollutants through the sink.

  21. I learned that I use like 1,400 gallons of water every day. By myself, that’s a lot. I think that its because I take long showers. And we don’t have a water collector. I would like to know how much the average person uses a day. I’ll probably try to reduce the amount of water I use each day. 1)When washing dishes by hand, don't let the water run while rinsing. Fill one sink with wash water and the other with rinse water.2) Adjust sprinklers so only your lawn is watered and not the house. 3)run your lothes washer and dishwasher only when their full. 4)plant in the fall, when conditions are cooler, and it rains more. 5)if your shower fills a one-gallon bucket in less than 20 seconds, replace it with a water-efficient model. http://www.wateruseitwisely.com/100-ways-to-conserve/index.php

Check for toilet tank leaks by adding food coloring to the tank.

    Avoid flushing the toilet unnecessarily.

I really can’t believe I use so much water. I use so much and I kinda feel bad because some people don’t get as much water as i do in one year that I get in a day. Me and my family need to learn how to minimize our water usage we are using way to much. I think all of us as a people can conserve and make the earth a better place and let it last longer.

    1) When washing dishes by hand, don't let the water run while rinsing. Fill one sink with wash water and the other with rinse water.
    2) Monitor your water bill for unusually high use. Your bill and water meter are tools that can help you discover leaks.
    3) If your shower fills a one-gallon bucket in less than 20 seconds, replace the showerhead with a water-efficient model.
    4) If possible, replace your old toilet with a modern low-flush one. While using only about half the water of old-style toilets, most newer models are now highly efficient
    5) Wash fruits and vegetables in a bowl, and fill you sink to wash and rinse dishes, instead of running the water.

    1) Wash dishes by hand.
Doing this reduces the amount of water u use because you are turning the water of between each.
    2) Make your toilet low-flow.
You can put a plastic water bottle in the back of your toilet. By doing so you will reduce the amount of water used per flush.
    3) Install a low flow shower head.
Although it cost a bit more money, in the long run you will lower ur water usage and save money.
    4) Use a pool cover if you have a pool.
By doing this you are not only keeping your pool clean but you are saving thousands of gallons of water from evaporating.
    5) If your family wants to play with the hose make sure you are on dry grass.
By doing this you will save water by using the excess water to water your lawn.

  28. 1. I am very surprised how much water my family and I use, I would think that I use way less water because it only takes me 10min to shower compare to other people. I think if I don’t use the sink that much I could save a lot of gallons and that could help the environment.

    2. http://www.wateruseitwisely.com/100-ways-to-conserve/index.php
    1. When washing dishes by hand, don't let the water run while rinsing. Fill one sink with wash water and the other with rinse water.
This will save a lot of water because you can wash as many dishes as you want without using a lot of water by doing that you will also decrease the payment for water.
    2. Wash your fruits and vegetables in a pan of water instead of running water from the tap.
This would help because you are washing two things at a time you will cut down to usage of water by half.
    3. Collect water from your roof to water your garden.
This will save you a lot of water that can be used for more important things, because you are using water from a natural resource and reusing it to clean something and at the same time you can water the lawn.
    4. When doing laundry, match the water level to the size of the load.
This is a good idea because people don’t pay attention to how much water is being used during laundry; if you match up the size much less water will get wasted.
    5. To save water and time, consider washing your face or brushing your teeth while in the shower.
I think this one is important because way too many people waste water when they shower, we don’t need to shower for 30min were wasting water while people and dying because they don’t have water to drink.

Each multi-head shower fixture uses an extra 40 to 80 thermal units of energy per year, equivalent to 50 gallons of gasoline, or one barrel of oil, and, as Harris notes, “When you waste water, you waste energy.” I think this article is interesting because we can all relate to it, we use the shower way too much all the friends that I know shower everyday about 30min a day, if the government would shut off the showers after 10-25min of usage the whole country would save a lot of water. With that water we can help the ones in need and provide them with drinking water.

Checking your faucets is a really easy one. Not flushing after everytime you go. Shorter showers than usual. Run washers only with full load. And not letting cooking water go to waste.

  37. I after finishing the H2O calculator I was surprise on who much water the average american uses a day. After see this I relies we should really conserve our water because even though our planet is 2/3 cover in water only 1% is freshwater and if the population keeps growing then they may not be enough water for everyone. Furthermore we should all take responsibility of their own action and help the planet because if we don’t then who will.

  45. after i finished the survey i was shocked to a great exstent. i am going to now start watching how much i use and try to save some.this was a great experience.

    5 WAYS TO SAVE WATER

    1. Check faucets and pipes for leaks
A small drip from a worn faucet washer can waste 20 gallons of water per day. Larger leaks can waste hundreds of gallons.

    2. Don't use the toilet as an ashtray or wastebasket
Every time you flush a cigarette butt, facial tissue or other small bit of trash, five to seven gallons of water is wasted.

    3. Check your toilets for leaks
Put a little food coloring in your toilet tank. If, without flushing, the color begins to appear in the bowl within 30 minutes, you have a leak that should be repaired immediately. Most replacement parts are inexpensive and easy to install.

    4. Use your water meter to check for hidden water leaks
Read the house water meter before and after a two-hour period when no water is being used. If the meter does not read exactly the same, there is a leak.

    5. Install water-saving shower heads and low-flow faucet aerators
Inexpensive water-saving low-flow shower heads or restrictors are easy for the homeowner to install. Also, long, hot showers can use five to ten gallons every unneeded minute. Limit your showers to the time it takes to soap up, wash down and rinse off. "Low-flow" means it uses less than 2.5 gallons per minute.
You can easily install a ShowerStart showerhead, or add a ShowerStart converter to existing showerheads, which automatically pauses a running shower once it gets warm.
Also, all household faucets should be fit with aerators. This single best home water conservation method is also the cheapest!
