Week 4 - California

This week, we've been a actively discussing the first amendment and our right to privacy through articles related to the burning of holy books and whether the police should be able to track your car without a warrant. Both of these helped us understand the differences in opinions about current events and politics within our country, while also helping you begin to understand and conceptualize your own understanding of our world.

For today, I would like you to summarize the major event taking place in California today. Please find two articles, post a summary of the issue, and explain why this event is important to all of us in the United States. Lastly, what could you do to help out?

When you are finished, please check out the news at drudgereport.com

Due: Monday at 12AM

  2. This is important because an attack on one of us is an attack on all of us. In this case the gas explosion has effected all of us. We can help by simply donating supplies that can help repair the damage.

There was a major gas line explosion in San Bruno, California on Monday. Over 100 people are being helped by medical assistance at different locations. About 200 homes were damaged by the fire. Everyone is trying their best to contain the fire. As of today it is still going on, but they are trying to keep everyone safe they say that is the main priority.
This is important for all of us in the u.s because we need to be aware of issues that can happen to us one day. We also need to be aware just in case there are family members, or even friends that live out there. We could send food and clothes to people down there to help get them back on their feet for now, or we could raise money to send to them to help rebuild their homes.

    Summary
These articles are talking about a pastor for a church in California trying the burn the sacred book of the Muslims. The Qur'an is a very important piece of Muslim history, and is considered highly offensive if things are done to it. The people in Afghanistan are going crazy about this issue and are threatening to retaliate against American troops that are still there if nothing is done. Since it is in our rights that we have freedom of speech and religion, he can do whatever he wants with the books that he possesses. The president and many other people have called him and asked him to reconsider, however he did consider that, people are still unsure about what his final decision will be. Hopefully he keeps in mind what he is doing to the people in the war.
    Importance to History:
This event is important to our history if it happens. It just shows that the news and media are responsible solely for this. If CNN didn’t cover this story, it wouldn’t have made it across borders to another nation. CNN is doing this just to make a big cash deposit. They don’t care what is going to happen if he does burn them so I blame this completely on CNN for broadcasting it. If this does happen, the future could look very different depending on what the people in Afghanistan try to do.
    What could we do:
The only thing that we could do, would be to drive down to Gainesville, and either rob him of his possessions, or kill him before he burns the books. There is nothing an average citizen can do in this type of situation, and unfortunately, the government can’t do anything either.

This article is about a partial nuclear meltdown that happened in 1959. To me this seems like it should have been solved a long time ago, it’s a hazard that can be very serious and it should have gotten much more attention earlier to clean it up. This sais to me that the government should have been more active in this kind of a situation.

    http://topics.nytimes.com/top/news/science/topics/forest_and_brush_fires/california_wildfires/index.html?scp=10&sq=california&st=cse
This article talks about wildfires that happen in the western parts of thwe united states specifficaly california. The fires are becoming much more costly to fight in an area that doesn’t get enough rain, and is filled with burnable bush and trees. With people living around these areas or vaction homes, its easy to start a fire. Most fires have been manmade. This is important to the United States because it could hurt the economy more with the prices of putting out the fires, it puts humans in danger, speciffically firefighters. The fires also threaten wildlife. In my own opinion I think the most flammable areas should be bought by the goverrnment and made into national parks where humans cannot live.

Thursday in California there was a fuel line that ruptured and set fire to over 40 houses in a suburb eight miles south of San Francisco. Four people have died, 52 were injured, and three were severely injured from this destruction. The fire was 15 acres wide. They do not know what happened to the natural gas line; all they know is that it ruptured. The National Transportation Safety Board, the company in charge of investigating pipeline accidents, said that they are sending a team to investigate. This is important to all of us in the United States because there could be pipelines all around us and if this one just burst for no reason than any of them could just burst for no reason killing many more people. To help out I could send money to help rebuild the homes.

Today Friday september 10, a gas-line exploded in California. Firefighters have been fighting the fire all through the night. Homes have sent fireballs into the air in a neighborhood near the San Fransico airport. People are saying its like a bomb went off. People also have said that when they first felt the boom they believed it was an earthquake. So far there have been 3-6 deaths plus the other 52 who needed hopitalization. After an interview with Pacifis Gas and Electric’s Blair jones, The cause of the ruptured gas-line is still unknown. This disaster is important to all of us because for one, I believe we need to get help down to those who need it, and secondley we need to put this fire out before it spreads and even more destruction unfolds. What I say we could do to help, is we could maybe donate food or water to those whose homes have been destroyed.

A huge explosion believed to have been caused by a gas line break sparked an inferno that destroyed San Bruno. There was only one person killed but 53 homes were displaced, which foreced people to “run for their lives” leaving 23 people injured, and many severly burned. More then 170 homes were destroyed or damaged. The explotion was so big that it lit up the sky for miles. Their were fire departments rushing in from all around the state to help with this massive fire that was spreading radpidly becauase of the wind that was blowing at 30mph.

The explosion ripped through San Francisco, killing atleast 4 people possibly more. The emergancy workers have not been able to get into any of the houses just yet but they are still trying. Officials said that there are only 4 dead and 52 injured, and 3 people suffering critical burnes.

A natural gas line explosion! The explosion was heard miles around. 53 homes destroyed and 120 more were damaged. The strong winds helped spread the fire from house to house. Fire fighters still battle with the remaining burning structures.
This article is important to all of us because fellow Americans died from this explosion. We should want to know what happened and if anybody is responsible for this. We should also want to help out. We could send money, provide shelter, send cloths, and send our support.

Thursday night, 38 homes have been destroyed because of the gas line explosion. This had occurred in a neighborhood in San Francisco. A 1,000 foot fireball (explosion) had gone into the air as homes started burning and people running. No one was warned about this explosion because no one knew this was going to ever occur. So far 4 people have died in the fire and at least 52 people have been injured. As well as 53 home damaged and tons of homes are now gone.
This is an important article because we need to be more cautious with gas lines even if we don’t know it will occur we need to be prepared. But there is really nothing that can happen or we can really do, this is just a horrible event. To help we could raise money as a class or a school to send over to California so we can help them start rebuilding houses or just fixing little things from this event.

These are the two articles I found on the San Bruno, California where the gas line exploded and over 100 people are being helped right now . An explosion happened between Glenview Drive and Earl Avenue, and it blow half a mile from where it happened, and four people remain dead as of right now.
This is an important to us because we had an attack on September 11th and everyone around us helped us pull through and it was hard for us because 3000 innocent people died from us getting attacked. So, therefore we should help them because they need any type of help at this point.
What we could do is get a bunch of boxes and send in old clothes and canned food, and blankets, pillows for them to sleep in case their house got burned down from this tragedy.

Thursday night in San Francisco, a fuel line erupted and killed four people. The damage of the explosion covered about 15 acres. The fire department for that area is doing everything they can to get everything under control. By Friday, 75% of it was controlled. They say they aren’t sure how or why the pipe erupted, but they plan to find out soon! 52 people were injured, and 3 were critically injured with third degree burns. A total of 38 structures had burned, and 7 more were damaged. The explosion occurred about 8 miles South of San Francisco. It was so loud and devastating that some officials thought that a plane might have crashed into the neighborhood.
This is important to all of us in America, because it shows us that we need to pull together in times of need. This is an unfortunate situation and could happen to any of us anywhere. If it happened in Chicago we would expect someone to help us out.
I am not sure that there is a lot that I can do to help out, because the damage is already done. Though, I think we could help raise money for the families who lost their homes and have injured members. If I had the opportunity, I would go and help them restore their living environment. No one deserves to have them happen to them, especially when they didn’t cause it.

this article is about a huge explosion that happened in San Fransisco, California. Soo far only 4 people are dead and 38 surburban homes are engulfed in flames while 120 homes suffered from serious damage. It happened Thursday night and was heard from miles away. It even shot up a fireball 1,000ft in the air. Some were taken to the hospital espiecially with severe burns while 4 firefighters were injured trying to prevent the fire. They are also expected the death toll rise up. The reason why its really important to us because it can remind us of 9/11. Althought the death toll was way different compared to that tragic day but it reminds us of the people who try there best to save those people. Firefighters would go in the burning houses to try n save people in the houses but end up seriously burned. I mean these people lost there homes which means they mite have to start from scratch it’s a really difficult to do something like that…I really hope these people can put out them flames before it gets really really serious.
The way we can help these people is maybe send them food. Maybe have volunteers to help them pick up the rubble or send them some cloths and stuff for them to sleep in.

What's going on is that there was a massive gasfire athat started when a gas pipe in California burst and started a fire. The company that owned the gas pipe apparently knew that it was leaking and yet they did nothing to fix the leak. There were over 18 trucks from the fire department there to help scourage through the houses. Around 4 people died in the fire and 3 were injured with serious burns. This will affect the United States because people will be even more angry with this new problem concerning gas companies. We can help by making sure that our pipe lines are safe to the people around us. The houses and money aren't the concern its the safety of the people nearby because the 18 homes that were destroyed are covered by insurance and lawsuits.

A major gas line explosion in San Bruno, California on Monday the 6th of September. Over 100 people are being helped by medical assistance at different locations and it is estimated that the fire damaged close to 200 homes. Gas pipes, windy weather, and water supply has complicated the fight with the fire. Water pressure in the area was low because the fire compromised a water main. About 100 had evacuated to shelters.
This is important to the us because it could hurt the economy because with the prices of putting out the fire, it puts firefighters and civilians in danger and it threatens the wildlife.

A man in California was accused of causing a wildfire. In this fire about 1000 homes were burned or affected in some way, the fire erupted in the Waterman Canyon area of the San Bernardino Mountains, there were about 90,000 acres of brush in the inland region east of Los Angeles. I think this is important because we need to find a way to provide shelter when someone is in need or if there is a fire going on. If we were prepared before this fire happened there wouldnt be much deaths or injuries.

A smoky cloud settled over denver because of the California fires, the fire is ongoing and ita cousing trouble for other states that are surroinding the border line. Because of the gazey smoke and cloud over Denver its hard for people to do their normal daily activities. I think this is important to know because the fire doesnt just cause problems for one state other states are affected by the smoke.

The Government’s New Right To Track Your Every Move With GPS
Government agents in California can now sneak onto your property with out a warrant and place a GPS tracking device under your car and you couldn’t protest because you wouldn’t know. Government agents can do this only if the residential area in question has a fence with “No Trespassing” sign posted or if the area has a guard house. This grant to police does not stop in California, it applies to 8 other western states as well. The judges who OK’d this police rule said that the only people not effected by this rule are rich people, the ones with the guard houses. Police can even go onto properties with “No Trespassing” signs posted as long as the resident does not become aware of the violation.

Appeals Made, Courts Limit Use of GPS Systems To Track Suspects
On Friday, federal courts ruled that the Ninth-Devision court’s decision to give police on the Western coast the power to use GPS tracking devices to track suspects’ every move is a violation of citizens Fourth-Amendment Rights. Judges placed limitations on police power to use the GPS. The limits are: they must have sufficient proof that the person in question is making violations of the law but do not need a warrant for placing the GPS system or to be on the persons’ property.
This event is important to all in the United States because in most cases when a state or group of states begin to run with a decision and make it final as the 9 states have, then other states begin to follow. Soon, the whole country is making this decision. Then, even if right now citizens of other states aren’t effected by this new rule, if the Supreme Court allows this, soon... very soon the entire country will be involved.

Nobody knows what caused the fire that took place in California. About 120 homes were damaged in the fire and about 52 people were injured. Survey teams are walking to houses to make it is for people to return. This problem is important to everyone in the United States because this type of problem can happen to anyone and people in other areas should try to help the victims. To help, people can discover the cause of the fire and allow victims to live with other people or hotels. People can also donate money to build new houses.

In California a 30-inch natural gas pipe 3 feet underground exploded into a wall of fire that destroyed at least a dozen homes in a 15 acre area. The fires killed about 4 people and injuring around 4 people. The cause of the explosion has yet to be discovered. This is important to the American people because our infrastructure is getting old and weak making it less safe. We need to inspect aged infrastructure to look for deterioration. We can fix it by replacing very aged pipes after awhile fixing just doesn't won't work anymore

Thursday in California there was a fuel line that expoaded caught 40 houses on fire in a suburb eight miles south of San Francisco. 4 people have died, 52 were injured from this destruction. The fire was 15 acres wide. They do not know what happened to the natural gas line; all they know is that it malfunctioned. The National Transportation Safety Board the company in charge of investigating these type of accidents accidents, said that they are sending a team to investigate. This is important to all of us in the United States because there could be pipelines all around us and if this one just burst for no reason than any of them could just burst for no reason killing many more people. To help out I could send money to help rebuild the homes.

On September 9, a thirty inch pipe that ran three feet underground burst. This eruption started a major fire. The fire covered about fifteen acres of land. Due to the pipes bursting, fifty two people were injured and four died, and three were chronically injured with third degree burn. It was said that it ruptured because it was put underground in 1948. This is important to the United States because this could have easily of been avoided if they checked it, and the four people who dies would still be here. I think that people can send them money to help the families who lost their houses rebuild them.
