Week 3 - Hurricane and War

This week, President Obama officially ended military combat missions in Iraq. In the midst of this, the East coast of the United States has been rapidly preparing for Hurricane Earl (it was expected to hit the coast at some point late Thursday or Early Friday). Both of these events will affect large populations in different, but substantial ways. For this week's post I would like you to address the following questions:

Iraq:
1) Please find and read two news articles that address the end of US military operations in Iraq. Provide the links and a one sentence summary.
2) Please summarize President Obama's address on August 31st:
(exerts can be found at: http://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2010/08/31/excerpts-president-barack-obamas-address-nation-end-combat-operations-ir)
3) Do you believe that the President made the right decision? Why or why not?
4) What questions do you have about Iraq and the US's military operations?

Hurricane Earl:
1) Please find and read two articles that address Hurricane Earl and the United States. Provide the links for both.
2) What areas will most likely be affected? What is the predicted damage?
3) How has the national and state government responded?
4) What questions do you have regarding Hurricane Earl?

Please email me with any questions, jschagrin@d127.org

President Obama’s address is about him saying that the American combat mission in Iraq has ended, and the Iraqi people have full responsibility of their government.
Yes I believe the president made the right decision to end the mission in Iraq because they have been there a long time and their job is done.
I have no questions about the topic.

  2. 1) http://topics.nytimes.com/top/news/international/countriesandterritories/iraq/index.html - This just explains what happened to the US army in Iraq and how we pulled out. http://www.cbc.ca/world/story/2010/08/31/iraq-united-states-formal-end-combat.html -This is the official article of us pulling out and why.
    2) He addressed the nation that we have done what we came to do in Iraq. We gave them a stable government and it’s no longer the responsibility of us to protect them. He also told us to prepare for hurricane Earl which is coming soon. He also said that we need to focus more on the economy.
    3) Yes I believe he did because we have done our part in their country. It’s time to focus on our home town and fix the economy.
    4) Why pull out now? And why have we been there for so long?

    2) North Carolina was the first one to get boarded by it. There are no major damages and there are not predicted to be too bad of damages. They will be minor but for now it’s looking good.
    3) The governor declared a state of emergency. The national government was considering evacuating the area but that never happened.
    4) None.

    2) In his address president Obama, praises all of the soldiers that took part in the war, serveed and/or died for our country. In his 18 minute speack barrack also spoke of fighting still happening and that will continue to happen even though he has pulled Us troops out of iraq.
    3) In my opinion, I think Obama made a good decision stopping the US troops I would think that all of this fighting helped drop our economy due to all the resources that we spent on the war in iraq.
    4) My only question aould be, what was the point in the whole war? What did we, or what did we want to get out of it?

    3) Aid will be sent to the most effected areas.

    4) My only question is how does this compare to Katrina? On a scale of 1-10, 10 being as bad as Katrina.

    2) Obama announced that the war in Iraq is over and by 2011 all the troups should be out. He said that thanks to this war, Iraq should have a good future and be able to take leadership over their governemt.
One of the main reasons why he ended the war was because now we have to put our focus on restoring our economy.

Obama is reducing the number of troops in combat. On August 31, Obama has decided to take out 100,000 troops already out of Iraq. He is slowly removing troops out as well as equipment. I think Obama made an okay choice, I knew one day we would have to leave Iraq but not all at once. It seems like he is taking people and equipment out in large numbers but kid of slow which is not good. What will happen when troops are pulled out of Iraq?

The area’s that are most likely are going to be affective are North Carolina, Maine, New York, Virginia, Maryland, New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire. The government has just said that they hope its not going to be as bad as Hurricane Katrina, everyone should take cover and prepare themselves for it. I think the Obama made the right decision because the war as gone on way to long and just needs to end for good. How come it took Obama to realize this far into the war to bring home the troops? 1. Well Obama is basically saying that the Operation Iraqi Freedom has finally ended soo far nearly 100,000 US Troops have been removed from Iraq. Now its our time to restore our Economy. That now its time for the Middle class to be stonger and our Children to have a Better Education. “Ending this war is not only in Iraq’s interest – it is in our own” – Barrack Obama
    2. I really do belive the President made a good decision because these men and women fightin for our country have families that miss them dearly. Prayin everysingle day that they are alive and not dead by a sucide bomber. Nobody wants to worry about after this war now cause there home with them.

He also is saying that being in Iraq was a lot of money for us and now that we have money that we are not spending on the “war” then we can continue to help boost our economy.
    3) I belive that president Obama made a really good choice about bringing our troops home. I personally think we have been there WAY too long and I am glad to see that they are coming home for good. I feel bad for the families that have actually lost a loved one in this “war” and I wish we never went to Iraq.

    2) Hurricane Earl will most likely affect the carolinas. It’s predicted damage is that there’s going to be heavy rains ahead and to the west of the storm and there’s going to be very strong winds on the east side of the storm, covering most of mainland Nova Scotia.
    3) The government has become more prepared for this hurricane since it is the fifth anniversery of Katrina coming and tearing through.

Hurricane Earl steamed toward the Eastern Seaboard early Thursday as communities from North Carolina to New England kept a close eye on the forecast, worried that even a slight shift in the storm's predicted offshore track could put millions of people in the most densely populated part of the country in harm's way. Vacationers along North Carolina's dangerously exposed Outer Banks took advantage of the typical picture-perfect day just before a hurricane arrives to pack their cars and flee inland, cutting short their summer just before Labor Day weekend. The governors of North Carolina, Virginia and Maryland declared states of emergency, sea turtle nests on one beach were scooped up and moved to safety, and the crew of the Navy's USS Cole rushed to get home to Norfolk, Va., on Wednesday ahead of the bad weather. The destroyer was supposed to return later this week from a seven-month assignment fighting piracy off Somalia. Farther up the East Coast, emergency officials urged people to have disaster plans and supplies ready and weighed whether to order evacuations as they watched the latest maps from the National Hurricane Center — namely, the "cone of uncertainty" showing the broad path the storm could take. The North Carolina National Guard also is deploying 80 troops to help and President Barack Obama declared an emergency in the state. The declaration authorizes the Department of Homeland Security and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to coordinate all disaster relief efforts.

To summarize this It basically was Barrock Obama declared the war in Iraq over and troops will be coming home soon. I do believe that president Barrock Obama made the right decision and I think that it maybe should of have been declared a while ago. Some questions that I have would be why were we there other then maybe inspecting the weapons of mass destruction etc. I also would want to know a specific date that the troops would be coming home again. My last question would have to be will there still remain conflicts between the U.S. and Iraq well obviously but to what extent and how bad?

Some parts that will be hit well Tropical cyclones can go upon hundreds of miles up miles so obviously it will be effecting lots of places homes buildings etc. You can conclude that it will be catastrophic and cause mass amounts of damage to the areas that it effected. Some questions that I have regarding hurricane Earl is how many possible deaths did it cost and what are other possible outcomes for the effected areas?. One more question that I will have is that how much property damage in not a estimate would it cost?.

I think he made a good decision because we did lose a lot of troops and a lot of people got hurt.

1.) http://www.huffingtonpost.com/rep-charles-rangel/bring-all-the-troops-home_b_705154.html : Obama has kept his promise on withdrawing the troops from iraq and also the stats that more than 4,421 troops have been killed in Iraq and over 31,629 have been wounded.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100831/ap_on_go_pr_wh/us_obama : Obama has opposed the war since it began in March of 2003 and he is disappointed about the hundreds of billions of dollars that have been spent since then war started 7 years ago.

2.) President Obama said in his speech that we are not only pulling out of Iraq in the interest of the Iraqis, but also in our ouwn because we’ve spent a lot of money in the war and also because our troops have made very big sacrifices in order to keep the peace. Also, now that we don’t have to worry about the war in Iraq, we can focus on the economic problem and getting out of debt. Lastly, he saluted the troops and not only congratulated them on their constant courage, bravery, and sacrifice.

3.) I believe that the presidents decision was right because we have been over there for over seven years and I think that should be long enough to instill trust in the Iraqi government. Also, we have been spending way to much money on the war and our country is in debt already so this should give him a good opportunity to fix that. Lastly, I also think it was a good idea to leave the 50,000 troops over there just incase the Taliban tries to take the government back.

4.) I would like to know that what would happen if he Taliban does try a takeover, if we will ship troops back to take care of that problem.

basically president Obama says that the war in Iraq is over that he is proud of our soldiers and that now it is time to come home. To solve the problems in our country.
I agree with president Obama. The war was stupid to begin with. We went in under false pretenses and we lost many lives. I think it’s been a long time coming their returning home. I think that he is making a good descision but I wonder how it will affect the states? Are the soldiers going to come home to unemployment and poverty?

President Obama stated in a rare Oval Office speech that the last US brigade has left Iraq and the the total number of troops that’ll remain in Iraq until late 2011 will be well under 50,000. Obama says that Iraqi people now have control of their own security and its time to move out.

Maliki Welcomes 'Independence' As U.S. Ends Combat Operations In Iraq
Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki declared Iraq’s independence and thanked US troops as our combat soldiers pulled out. He stated that the Iraqis are setting up military training bases, training their own troops, and are now just about ready to establish their own military.

President Obama’s Speech Addressing the End of the Military Operations in Iraq
President Obama’s speech on Aug. 31st gave Americans hope for a new vision on what our government is doing to help what’s in our nation’s own coasts. Obama stated that by the end of 2011, all U.S. troops in Iraq will be home and staying there, and the troops currently in Afghanistan will be out hopefully be home by the end of 2014. President Obama also stated that he will now be focusing on the main problem here in America: the problem with the jobless Americans and getting them jobs. Obama said that he will start reinstating workers to assembly lines, and other jobs to start rebuilding our economy.
I believe President Obama made the right decision by pulling troops out of Iraq now instead of two... three years from now when the Iraqi government is fully stable. I also believe that Obama has made the right decision to focus on creating jobs for American citizens.
I do not have any questions about the U.S. military operations as I agree with everything going on.
