Earlier this week, we had a detailed conversation about Pakistan. For this week, I would like you to do four things:
Make sure you read this entire post before you start working...
1) Read and post two links to articles about the Pakistan Flooding that have been published in the last day.
2) Summarize what is going on in Pakistan - provide numbers and write in complete sentences (This should 5-7 Sentences at minimum).
3) What did you find the most suprising about the flooding in Pakistan? Did you know about this natural disaster before this class? What emotions did you feel as you learned about this? (5-7 Sentneces at minimum)
4) What could we as a class or school do to help the people of Pakistan? What would you recommend? (5-7 Sentences at minimum)
It would be wise to type your repsone in Microsoft Word, so you can proof-read and save your work. When you are done, you can copy and paste it into the comment section under this post. Please as Mr. Schagrin if you have ANY questions.

2. Pakistan is having the worst flooding in 80 years. About 20 million people have been seriously affected, and there’s is about 8 million in urgent need. It was affected about 62,000 square miles. The flooding was caused by the arrival of the monsoons last month. This flooding could set Pakistan back many years. Pakistan has lost 5,000 miles of roads/railways, 7,000 schools, and about 400 heath faculties. To help out the United Nations pledged about 460 million in international donations.
3. What I found the most surprising about the disaster is that so many people have lost their homes. Also how many people have died. With all the deaths and diseases everywhere, more people are bound to get sick. I never knew about Pakistan flooding before this class. I felt shocked and surprised when I heard about this because it’s such a big and I never heard about it.
4. Our class or school could do a little to help the victims. We could maybe send over food, money or supplies. We could also donate out time to help rebuild houses, school, roads, and hospitals. That would help out a lot because it would give all the homeless and sick people a place to live and be treated. I think that as a school we should raise money to donate to Pakistan to help rebuild there devastated areas.

3. No one wants to help , i felt sorry for them and i knew about this before class .
4. send clothes , food , etc to help out . Have a fundraiser .

soo far what I’ve read is that 17 million people have been affected by the floods. As well as 1.5 million houses has been destroyed. 70% of population has believed to fled there houses over night before all of that. More than 1,500 people have died.what really surprised me was that 70% of the population has fled over night I mean that’s a lot of people. But it kinda sucks that they werent prepared for that soo there going for a really strong struggle.i kinda found out about this a couple days before this class. I found out by going on yahoo and reading the news they put. I felt kinda bad for this kinda people. When I heard about the earthquake in Haiti i just didn’t know what to say about it…I was just speechless and my mouth dropped. Now with Pakistan these kinda people our poor. They dont have that kinda money to rebuild and get food and espieacially medicine for the sickness and dieases that’s there already. Its just sad that something like that has to happen. To be honest I really don’t know on how to help. I guess what we can do is just donate anything to them like cloths that don’t fit us and food, money, shoes, anything that can be able to help them out. I just hope that everything will turn out ok for these people. =/

1. Many people are suffering from the floods in Pakistan. It has been the worst flooding in 80 years for the impoverished country. Around 20 million lives have changed since the floods have started. Disease is constant threat that affects the victims. More than 4 million people lost their homes with most of them not having a place to go. The flood has covered at least one fifth of the country.
2. What I found most surprising is how a flood can do so much damage. I normally don’t think of a flood being this bad and that’s why I was so shocked. It has affected so many people and covered a lot of ground throughout Pakistan. I heard about the flooding before this class, but I didn’t know how bad it was. I feel really bad for the families that were torn apart from this flood and the people who have lost a loved one.
3. There are plenty of things we can do to help the flood victims. We could start a fundraiser and send the money to a flood relief program. We could also raise awareness of the flood by putting up posters and facts about the devastation. I would recommend having people do a fundraiser so we could send the money to people who can do a lot of good. We could sell candy or something like that.

More than 17 million people have been affected by this natural disaster. The U.S government has been receiving a lot of threats from local groups to harm the people helping the flood. One of these groups is the Tehrik-e-Taliban, a group committed to destroying the current government in Pakistan. The U.S has not made any serious moves yet but they do have threat information in their possession. The U.S gave 200 million dollars to the Pakistan victims to help support the wounded. A lot of the water is starting to recede from Pakistan but there are still high flood risks around the country.
I had no idea about the crisis going on in Pakistan until the first day of current issues. The most surprising it that it’s not been a big topic around everywhere except during class. I feel bad for the people living there, they already go through enough with the bad living conditions and the war near their homeland, and now that the flood is there they have been crippled. The worst thing is that some of the people are uncertain about the help of other countries such as Asia and the U.S. Hopefully this will be easy going for the people living there from here on out. The sad part is that if this happened to us, we know that we would have a lot of people helping, in their country, there are not a lot of people willing to help or can help.
There is nothing that our class could do to help the flood disaster. The only thing they need right now is money to help get rebuilding going there and to create dams. We could give a donation but it would not make much of a difference at all. We wouldn’t be able to give a big amount of money because of our school and the economy the way it is. Our school can’t do anything which is why we feel bad; there is nothing that we as a group can do to help the Pakistanis across the world. In the end, everything will work out like it always does. The U.S also gave Pakistan over 2 million pounds of relief already with more on the way.

In Pakistan floods have killed thousands and left thousands homeless. The floods all started because of crazy monsoons that happened day after day. The rain water over flowed rivers and ponds. The water from the rivers rose to high and flooded the village throughout the day. Within hours the water was at a grown mans shoulder level. Many people died from the floods because they were not prepared.
I find most surprising about this disaster is that it was all caused by rain water in the matter of days. There wasn’t a hurricane or another crazy disaster to start this just a lot of rain and that’s what’s so shocking. Before this class I did not pay attention to much to the news except for listening to my parents talk so I did not know about this flood. I feel bad for the people in Pakistan because there are so many homeless and missing now it is very sad.
As a school I would recommend putting posters around school because I’m sheer there are a lot of people who are not aware of what is going on. We could also raise money to give to Pakistan to help recover from this disaster. Write a letter to the president asking to help those people in Pakistan. As a class we can talk and brain storm on ideas in what to do.
This is 2 articles I found on the internet.

1) What’s going on in Pakistan is there has been a major flood across they’re city. It actually flooded they’re main street to where the USA drove there and was trying to deliver they’re food. Also, they had to go to Afghanistan to transfer their food to get it to Pakistan. I heard that it’s called the monsoon season over there. There was one ninth of their population is homeless because the rain took out there food shelter and clean water. The water damage is so bad, that it has ruined just about every single bridge, school and river.
2) What I found out most interesting was that the rain took out all of the school’s, bridges and most of the rivers. Which comes to the conclusion with the rivers is that it makes it harder to stop it and block from doing any other damage. I did know about this natural disaster before this class, from watching it on the news before, and when I heard about it… I was absolutely speechless with the devastation about it. It shocks me to think something as harmless as rain to destroy Pakistan.
3) As a class I think we should raise some money and send it to them so they can do something with it. Or even better, bring in canned foods from home and put all of them in a box. Then send it out to them so they can eat, along with water bottles. I think just by doing that it can make a difference because they can look at us, with some respect, not saying they didn’t have any in first place, but they can also look at us with a different view too.

What’s going on in Pakistan? Well, In Pakistan there was a huge flood that has affected more 15 million people. The flood has also affected 6 million children; 3.5 million of those children are in serious need of help! The UNICEF has sent humanitarian supplies over to Pakistan to help with water, health, nutrition and sanitation needs. According to news articles this flood has affected MORE people than the 2004 tsunami, Haiti earthquake, and the recent earthquakes in Pakistan combined. There are thousands of people who have no homes because the flood has destroyed them. There has said to be 175,000 people who have fled from their homes and are now living in camps, so they have some type of shelter. There have been so many people that have been affected by this tragic flood, and now they have to worry about diseases and making sure their families are alright.
When I first heard about this flood that happened I was so shocked and I had no clue that this had happened to these people. What I found most surprising was the amount of children that were affected and how many of them are in need of a lot of help. I had no idea that this flood had happened until we were told to research about Pakistan. Now that I know about the flood I feel so bad for the people that have to go through all this and I wonder if there were any ways to help them. I would love to help these people who have been affected because this is such a huge thing that will affect them for a few years not just a few weeks.
If the people in our school could do anything to help the people of Pakistan, I would suggest doing a fund raiser or something to earn money to send over to them to help them fix up their homes. We could have a canned food drive and send them food so they do not have to worry about the diseases. There is not much we can really do to help which is sad to even think about but I myself would try my hardest to help these people who have been affected by this dreadful flood.

1.In Pakistan they have been hit with terrible flooding.Six million people need shelter. Twice that number people need things like basic aid and food. 20 million people have been affected by the flood. The estimate number of deaths is 1,300 to 1,600 people.62,000 square miles have been covered by the flood. Which is about the size of england.More than 5,000 miles of roads and railways have been washed away. 7,000 schools have been destory by this terrible flood. More than 200,000 livestock have been killed. Which means they are going to be left with no food for a couple months.
2. The thing I find most intersenting about this flood is how much water is.When I think of flooding I think of a inch in your basement. But when I saw the pictures I was surpised because I didn’t know rain could rain do this much damage to one country and they still have more rain coming. I ususally don’t watch the news or read the newspaper. So I did not know about this natural disaster until class.I feel terrible for all these incent people have been affected by this natural disater.
3. We can do some fundraising to help these people get food. An idea is that people usually don’t like there change. So what we can do is keep a bucket by the casier in the cafeateria. So that when they pay and they don’t want there change they can just put in the bucket. Then we can use the money to donate to paksitan to help them get food and basic aid. Or we can come up with an idea as a class and try to raise as much as we can.

2. In Pakistan the worst flooding in 80 years happened this summer of 2010. On July 22 the flooding started in the province of Baluchistan. About 20 million people have been very affected by the flooding. More then 4 million people are homeless or without shelter. The number of people in need for help is now about eight million and is expected to rise. The death toll of the flooding estimates from 1,300 to 1,600.
3. The most surprising thing about the flooding that I found out was the death toll. I found this the most surpising because I didn’t think that a flood could kill that many people. Before we started talking about the flooding in Pakistan in class I knew nothing about it. I felt sad about what had happen to the people how died or were affected by the flooding. I thought what if my house got destroyed by a flood and how that would affect me, my family, and the rest of my life.
4. As a school we could raise money and food supplies to send to the familys in Pakistan. To raise the money we could have a fundraiser at the school. We could also post awareness around the school by putting posters up.

ReplyDeletehttp://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/aug/27/pakistan-floods-levee-thatta
. People in Pakistan are experiencing the worst flooding in over 80 years. This rapid moving flood has caused over 20 million people to be left without shelter, food, and clean water. Also, more than 1,500 people have died, and 17.2 million have been affected. Homes to 1.2 million people have been destroyed or badly damaged. Many physical strands of Pakistan that held there county together like bridges, roads, schools, communities and many more were also ruined due to the flooding. Many countries have come to support Pakistan and give them money. For instance, the United Nations requested for $460 million in international donations. Pakistan will also receive 900 million dollars in emergency funds for the World Bank to help in recovery efforts.
2. The thing that I found most surprising about the flooding is how fast it all happened. From July 22, 62,000 square miles have been covered by the flood. Not only did it destroy homes and communities, but it also destroyed the people. One- ninth of the population has already died, and with that it will be hard for all those bodies to be put six feet underground. The growing rate of people dying and the water surrounding the people will cause many diseases. Before Current Issues I heard about the flooding on T.V., but I didn’t really know that it was as bad as it really is.
3. As a school, we should do many different fundraisers to help gain money for Pakistan, just like we did for Haiti. For Haiti we sold candy outside of the lunchroom, and that gained a lot of money. We also did something where students would put change in a different jar with a teachers name on it and the teacher with the most money would get a pie to their face. That was a good way to get kids to give money because it was fun and exciting for the students. Pakistan will need as much money as they can get, and I think that it would be good for our school to do something good for them. Raising money for them would also be a good reflection on Grayslake North and the students.
1) Read and post two links to articles about the Pakistan Flooding that have been published in the last day. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010_Pakistan_floods
ReplyDeletehttp://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/subjects/f/floods/2010_pakistan_floods/index.html
2) Summarize what is going on in Pakistan - provide numbers and write in complete sentences For almost a month, there has been flooding in Pakistan due to a monsoon. The area that has been infected is about 160,000 square kilometers. Around 2,000 people and close to a million homes have been killed and destroyed in the disaster. Another 20 million people have been left homless, diseased, hurt, or all above. Its said that it will take 5-7 years to right everything happening.
3) What did you find the most suprising about the flooding in Pakistan? Did you know about this natural disaster before this class? What emotions did you feel as you learned about this?
What I found surprising was the amount of people that were effected. I knew that it was a large amount but i didn't know it was that many people. I had only heard vaguely about what happened in Pakistan. I feel some empathy towards their cause because of what's happened to them. I also feel surprised that something this bad happened in Pakistan. I usuall hear nothing but terrorist activity from Pakistan.
4) What could we as a class or school do to help the people of Pakistan? What would you recommend?
We could start fundraising at our sports games and around the school. We could sell candy outside the lunchroom and have people walk around the school with candy to sell. We could also have a competition between teachers on which is liked most. Like we could put jars out and have people put money in the jars for which teacher they like most. We could host a battle of the bands kind of thing here at north and people could pay money to get into the concerts.
In Pakistan there has been a major flood wiping out roads buildings, even entire cities. This flood has been cause diseases such as malaria, respiratory infections and diarrhea. These diseases have caused the death of an estimate of 1,500 people and counting. This disaster has also left over 20,000 people homeless, with no food or water, with a total of about 17.2million affected by the disaster. An estimate of 5-10 years has been made in order to just get people back onto their feet. As for the cost there is an estimated of $460,000 in repairs to be made. What I have found most surprising is that a flood has displaced 17 million people away from their community, because before this class I had no idea about what was going on in Pakistan. And it really made me feel bad, because a lot of Americans are sitting around doing nothing while there are millions upon millions of people suffering while we have the good life. In order to help these people we could get a fundraiser started or a food drive of some sort to help out all of the suffering civilians in Pakistan.

2. its suprising that the flooding is happening fast from july over 60,000 square miles have been covered by the floods it destroyed homes and people and there lifestyles
3. in schools they shud have fundraisers to raise money and get food and clean water for the people in pakistan they are stuck there with dirty water and not alot of food they need major help they need help from school communities and famous people who have lots of money lots of it like bill gates and michael jordan tehy should both donate money and food for the people of pakistan

2.
Since July 22nd, the Indus River has been flooding and has already displaced around 20 million people (1/9 of the population). The flooding that Pakistan has been experienced in the past 80 years. The World Bank has already pledged $900 million to help the recovery effort as opposed to the United Nations $460 million. Also, around 1,500 people have already died in the flooding waters and many more are missing. Lastly, Pakistans government is very corrupt and and at threat to being overrun by radiacal islamic militants.
3.
What I found most suprising about the flooding in Pakistan is that still more than a month after the flooding started, it’s still going and people are still dying. Also, I was astounded that over 20 million people have lost everything and the fact that that is a ninth of the population. I knew about the flooding before class but I was surprised and saddened that not everyone else in the class knew about it. When I hear about this story, I feel horrifed because I could never imagine losing everything I had in a blink of an eye. Also, I feel supportive to all the rescue efforts that’s going into getting Pakistans infrasructure back on track.
4.
I think as a class we should all donate to the Pakistani relief fund. No matter how little money they get, it helps. Also, I think we should do a fundraiser where we send blankets or clothes to the victims of the flooding.

ReplyDeletePakistan is flooding and the people of Thatta are fleaing their homes. Homes are being flooded over night and people are getting displaced. The government is trying to transport people out of the city to some where safe. But the flood is getting closer to its major port city. This flood started with the a monsoon and flooded the Indus River. Historic tombs and graves are also at stake. This a bad time for pakistan to flood beacause they werent really prepared for it. And I think they should get more people working to make and fix broken leves.

After the flooding in pakistan there is still more rain to come. With the people low on food and water and shelter charities from the U.K quickly semt supplies to Pakistan. In some areas of pakistan people are having to ride donkeys to get to some people where there arnt roads anymore. The people that are being effected by the flood are being transported to camps where the ywill stay temporarilly. Our class or our school could contribute to help them by sending food and water to the Pakistanis.

Pakistan flood waters are not expected to go down until the end of July. 3 weeks of flooding have left 20 million either homeless or effected by the flooding in other results. In this flooding there is believed to be at least 1,500 people dead. The U.N. appealed last week for 459 million U.S. in international aid for immediate relief to Pakistan. Army crews On Wednesday delivered evaporated milk and water to some people who did not have any drinking water etc. I feel the most surprising things about this flood to find out that 20million people lost their home or are affected in different ways to me that is really scary. I did not know about this before class either so this was really interesting to me. Other surprising things about this flood is that already there is 1,500 dead and probably is only going to be increasing. Emotions I felt towards this subject was sadness and sympathy and regret that it would ever hit anywhere in the world. This truly was shocking. Us as people or a class could help Pakistan by maybe having a fund raiser or something or taking a couple bottles of waters or a couple cans of food and sending it to Pakistan. We can also as a class maybe even send in other goods like blankets or clothing of sorts. We can send away anything we do not have any need for that maybe some one in Pakistan would have a need for. We can try to send money does not have to be in large amounts. Finally we can probably even send toys or something for the little kids being affected by this natural disaster.
In pakistan there are about 4.3 million acres under water. They have 18 helicopters coming into pakistan to help get people there supplies. a lot of people there are with out homes and they have very little food to eat and water to drink. also 9 million people are in need of immediate support.
ReplyDeleteI fell that we should be greatful for all the things that we have because alot of country don't have all thing that we have.
I think that we should give pakistan clothes, money, food, water and other thing that they may need.

Pakistan has experienced major flooding throughout the last month. People say this is the worst rain they have ever gotten in the last 80 years. Just in the past week the floods have consumed whole villages, sinking them and leaving them water-logged. So far, there have been 1600 deaths. If that’s not a lot, 4.2 million people have been affected by it. The flooding continues south as 500,000 people were evacuated in 11 districts near the Indus River. Prior to taking current issues I never heard anything about the flooding. Now what I hear about it, it really strikes me as very important because just the flooding alone has affected 4.2 million people. Some of the most surprising things about the flooding were how whole entire villages sunk because of all the water. Another would be how big of a problem this could end up being if help isn’t given. There could be new diseases form, more deaths, more flooding, a ton of bad things. About helping, I think as a class we could all donate like 2-5 dollars and save it all up and maybe help out a family or something. We could also bring in materials like canned foods or clothing we don’t need for people who have nothing during all the flooding.

2)One Fifth of Pakistan is flooded due to summer monsoons. The floods have killed around 1,500 people and affected over 20 million people. Yet the worst is not over Pakistan's people now face disease. The deaths have contaminated the water in flooded areas. The flood is still moving and getting worse and worse.
3)I was surprised to read that the flood is still moving and still is flooding areas. Yes I heard about the floods in Pakistan on the news. I never knew how bad the flooding was till I read more about it. I feel bad for the people who have lost a loved one. I have no idea what it feels like to lose your whole life in one day
4)We should have a fundraiser and give the money to multiple flood relief groups so they all can help. Another option is to have a food drive to feed the affected areas in Pakistan.

ReplyDeletehttp://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-south-asia-11105165
2) Pakistan has been struggling because of the major flooding that has taken place. Towns have been destroyed and in Sindh over half a million people have had to evacuate their homes. Also 17 million people and still counting, have been affected because of the floods. Millions all over Pakistan have been warned to evacuate their towns because of the damaged that was going to come. Now there are 5 million people homeless leaving them nowhere to go and needing shelter. There have been 1 billion funds to contribute to Pakistan but that still isn’t enough.7.9 million acres of farmland have been lost in the flood, which means that crops to eat are no longer there for people to eat. So it’s not only that everything has been destroyed but also what will they eat to survive.
3) In Pakistan the most surprising thing that I didn’t know about before was how so much farmland for crops have gotten destroyed, I guess I just never really thought about how much land that is that could have been used for crops. Also shelter for wildlife and homes for people. But now they will have to regain all of that and start all over. I did hear about the flooding in Pakistan on the news before but not the details like how much this flood has destroyed. If that happen to where I lived I would have been scared because I don’t know what I would have done, I mean what you can do. So just thinking about Pakistan like as if that’s where I had lived I feel bad and I almost get a better feel for what they might be going though.
4) To help the people in Pakistan as a class we could send supplies over to help out. Also we could raise and donate money as a school. We could also collect items like old clothing and blankets to send over to Pakistan to help them. I think anything to give to them is better then doing nothing.

ReplyDelete2) The Pakistan's have had the worst flooding in over 80 years about 20 million people have been hit really hard by this disaster. There were Millions left without food, shelter and even clean water to drink. There has been a lot of people to help them down there to survive. What people have been doing is putting roads bridges and even house back together down in Pakistan.
3) I have found out the most interesting thing is that Pakistan’s do not want to lease there homes even know there lives are in danger. I did hear about this a little about this before this class but not to much. I felt that if I could I would go help them down there because of how much danger and help they need, I also think that there should be a lot more help down there.
4) I say as a hole school we should raise money for there down there to help them get back on there feet and back on the life they used to have. As a class I think we could also raise money but also, send letters to them asking what they could use down there and send it to them or even have the military send them supplies to help them out too.

Because of the flooding in pakistan the UN estimates that about 1600 people have died, and 20 million have been affected, with eight million people made homeless by the monsoon rains. A likely 8000 are still cut off by the flood¬water. North-eastern regions of India are also suffering from flash flooding and landslides. The diocese of Peshawar, which includes some of the worst-affected regions, has set up four relief camps which are serving 100,000 Families. Disease is spreading fast because of the condtions and the dirty drinking water.
The most surprising thing I found about the flooding is how badly it hurt people, their homes, and how its continuing to impact lives as disease spreads.
I remember hearing about something in Pakistan when my parents were watching the news, but I didn’t really pay any attention to it.
I felt bad for the people and their families. I wondered if there was anything I could do to help but I haven’t heard of anything. It also made me ask why is this not such a big deal and everything that went on in Haiti was. I understand that Haiti is apart (I think) of the US territory but it sounds as though this is, if not worse, equal to the same amount of damage.

2) People are planning evacuations. There are threats against foreign aid workers in Pakistan. There might be more drowned bodies. Monsoon floods affected 17 million Pakistanis a month ago. 6 out 10 Pakistanis think Washington is an enemy. Another flood can happen again. Over 1,600 hundred people died in the flood. Children are at risk of disease due to contaminated water. Many people are going to relief camps. The United States is giving money to help the victims of the flood.
3) The possibility of another flood surprised me. I knew about this disaster before this class. I felt shocked about flood and it is hard to imagine how this problem will be solved. I also found the quick spread of disease and the interference in helping surprising.
4) People can donate money to help the victims. People can also encourage the Pakistanis to stop viewing Americans as enemies and stop threats against foreign aid workers. I recommend that people donate medicine and food. The victims should fine homes in other countries. Other countries should stop fighting wars and help each other, especially the flood victims.

2) The Flooding in Pakistan is being caused by the monsoon rain due to the season. 14 million people are being affected by the floods which is more than the tsunami, 2005 Pakistan Earthquake, and the Haiti earthquake put together. The Nations has promised to donate 460 million dollars in donations from around the world. Authorities say that over 1400 people have died from the flooding and that millions have had to move or relocate to higher more safer areas. The United Nations have began to distribute tents and supplies to the families that are being effected the worst by the floods. Rains are moving south which means that devastations could spread. People are homeless and living wherever it is semi-livable. People say that for Pakistan to recover and rebuild everything that was destroyed by the floods could be costly and very time consuming.
3) I was most surprised about the floods when I had first heard about it which was when I had first heard from my teacher Mr. Shagrin (sorry if it’s misspelled). I was just shocked when I had heard the numbers of deaths and people effected and how hard it must be for the whole country because of the fact that it’s a third world underdeveloped country which makes it a lot harder with those facts alone. During the class discussion that we had during 8th period and with all the information that Mr. Shag was giving us I felt bad for everything that was happening and mostly at the fact of how high and rich we are living here in the United States which is one of the top developed countries in the world. I asked myself the question, if this were to happen to us, we would be able to handle it a lot better as a country. But I feel bad because I know that a lot and almost everyone and that country cannot survive without help because this is a major blow to them.
4) As a class, I do not believe we can do much. But as a school we can do a lot if we all unite together with the same goal and commitment. We could raise money, which would probably not be not that much to a country, but to one family it could mean the world. Also with a whole school that dedicated to helping a cause it would definitely provoke other schools, organizations, businesses, etc, to do the same and probably more.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has described "heart-wrenching" to the destruction he witnessed on a visit to flood-devastated Pakistan. He said the scale of the disaster was greater than anything he’d seen before. He again urged the world to speed up aid to the country, saying shelter and medicine were desperately needed. The Pakistani government says up to 20 million people have now been affected by the monsoon floods. At least 1,500 are known to have lost their lives. Health experts are warning that the threat of epidemics in flood-hit areas is growing. President Asif Ali Zardari announced further help from the UN's central emergency response fund totalling $27m. He repeated his calls for the international community to come to Pakistan's aid. Valuable crops like sugar cane and wheat are under water. Mud houses are submerged, millions have fled. He said one fifth of Pakistan had been ravaged by the floods that began more than two weeks ago in the mountainous north-west of Pakistan. It’s swept south across a quarter of the country. On Wednesday the UN launched a $459mill appeal for emergency aid for Pakistan. It said that billions of dollars would be needed in the long term. The US has already donated at least $70mill to the country, which is a key regional ally in fighting terrorism.
ReplyDeleteSHIKARPUR, Pakistan – The water came in the morning, quietly sweeping across the rice paddies and into the village. Within hours, it was as high as a 6-foot-tall man's shoulder. It had barely been raining at all. Weeks after massive downpours first battered northern Pakistan, submerging tens of thousands of square miles, killing about 1,500 people and leaving millions homeless, those floodwaters are still sweeping downriver and through the south, adding one more layer of misery to people long accustomed to hardship. Up to a third of Pakistan’s 170 million people live in poverty. Six years ago, Pakistan was leveled by an earthquake that killed 80,000 people. One farmer seemed stunned at how little help he'd received. “There is no food, no water. Most of all, there is no help in sight.” Very often, there is also no useful information. When villagers do receive news, often from radio reports, it's often so specific that it is far beyond false information. What information might help — like where flood waters could go after breaching a riverbank — are left unsaid. But when a burst river began cutting a new course through a new province, no one thought to warn the hundreds of villages in its path. "We heard that the river had flooded, but we never thought it could reach our village. We didn't even know we were in danger."
I found most interesting about these reports on the flooding of Pakistan how much the government of Pakistan is asking for money to rebuild the country, but is doing little to save the people who are trapped and starving.
I did not know about the flooding in Pakistan before this class.
I feel bad for the people trapped and starving and thirsty. They are in deep trouble, literally.
We as a class could start a school-wide, maybe even district-wide donation-creation group that can go around neighborhoods and ask for donations door-to-door. Get students to bring in money and set a good goal. Maybe even add in a small prize or reward for donating a high amount. We could start a petition with signatures in each class for those who would like to participate in going door-to-door.

2. At the moment in pakistan there is a horrible event transpiring. People have lost their houses, lost jobs, lost family members, they basically have lost anything that meant something to them, anything that has sentimenatal value they have lost. They have no means of food or clean water, and if they do it’s a very limited supply. They have just enough food to get by or maybe even less then that. People in pakistan have a very small chance of getting out alive a lot of people have lost their lives.
3. I did know very much about natural diasters, I didn’t know anything about people in pakinstan until this class. My heart really goes out to them I cant even image how it would be to be in such a terrifying and horrible situation. I really feel sad and sorta bad when I think about the people over their I really wish they could pull out of it in less then 1 year but the situtation doesn’t look good. The thing that surprised me is that the flood came and took everything with it was swift and diastrous.
4. I think we could send military help or send resources over their that could help them, but then again we are self centeted and selfish as americans. We don’t know their sruggle, and I bet half of our population doesn’t care about what happens to them that’s why I think we wouldn’t help them, but us as students we could have a food drive and send the food over there and maybe some of those people will have a better chance of living. I think we should help them but the chances are slim.

ReplyDelete1. Trucks that are carrying U.S.A military vehicles under blue tarpaulins were caught in a 30-mile traffic jam due to the flood, the troops had trouble getting to their section and area that they needed to be at. On the main highway from the southern port of Karachi to the capital, Islamabad, at the weekend where floodwaters had broken the road and reduced traffic to single file because they didnt want any crashes because that would make the traffic worse. The flood caused so many problems because of the traffic troops had trouble getting food and their water to stay in good shape and perform.
ReplyDelete2. I am shocked that the floods are causing so many problems, there are so many deaths because of loss of homes, shelter and food. I think people and other countries should do something about it because the U.S.A has a lot of money and we dont have that many problems as they do, but the U.S.A doesnt want to help them because of the war.
3. What i learned about Pakistan was that they have way many more problems than just the war.
4. Our school should something about it. We should raise money and send some food and clothes for younger kids. I think we need to help the younger kids first because they need more help than the older generation.

Weeks after massive downpours first battered northern Pakistan, submerging tens of thousands of square miles, killing about 1,500 people and leaving millions homeless, those floodwaters are still sweeping downriver and through the south, adding one more layer of misery to people long accustomed to hardship. Pakistanis have lived through a deeply corrupt political establishment, a long history of military coups, a bloody Islamist insurgency and widespread poverty. Up to a third of its 170 million people live in poverty. Six years ago, entire towns in Pakistani-controlled Kashmir were leveled by an earthquake that killed 80,000 people. It's a look that has become commonplace across the flood zone, an area larger than England. Seen from the air, a huge swath of Pakistan has become an archipelago of misery, a vast lake of brown water dotted with islands of high land. Some of the islands are small stretches of road that now come from nowhere and go nowhere. Some are marked by the husks of ruined mud homes, or small concrete buildings with collapsed walls. A few still have people on them: either those waiting to be saved or those who have refused to leave. Most of the people living in the flood zone are villagers who have little they can afford lose. Thousands have stayed close to what is left of their homes to protect what they can from bandits and water.
I did not know about the flooding until the class period. Im deeply sad for the people in pakistan but the truth is I don’t really care if they make it or not. I don’t like dealing with the forign matters of ameirca. America does not need to help pakistan they can just leave them there to rot.
Our class could collect money to get them food. We could as a school could host a couple of pakistan people. We could send a very strongly worded letter about helping. That’s what I think on this subject.

2. The flooding in Pakistan has cost millions of dollars in damage, it is an estimate that 1,500 people are reported dead and 20,000 are homeless. It is said to take about 5-10 years to rebuild, preventing this generation in Pakistan the education it needs to have a workable job. The waters have also swept the crops and livestock preventing the people from getting the necessary food for survival. Waters are carrying diseases like diarrhea increasing dehydration forcing the people of Pakistan to drink the same water that causes this disease. Even as the waters begin to recede the damages it has done shall hold the country back for years.
3. The Pakistan flood was a real surprise to me because before this class I did not know about this. The flooding was really was very scary and it is sad that people are going though this. What surprised me were the diseases the water caused. The people were getting infected and dying by the same disease that we can survive in our country. It is sad to think that we live in safety and other countries are fighting to survive.
4. The Pakistan flood has caused tons of damage and I think we should set up a donation. We can donate money or/and food and send it to Pakistan. If we all donate a few dollars and a few canned foods we could help the people of Pakistan. We need to help these people because one day we might need help and they can help us. That is my idea on how to help the Pakistani people.

Close to a million homeless people. There are 200,00 deaths and more everyday. People have decided to take refuge at a graveyard for patron saints of the 1800's. Currently they are trying to prevent diseases spreading around. They estimate it will take up to 6 years to repair the damages.
I’m kind of embarrassed to say I didn’t know anything about Pakistan or any other news. Hearing about all this I’m suprised that people are refusing to leave their home and livestock and endangering their own lives. I think that it would be hard but I rather have to start over than not get the chance. I was guilty for being glad that I’ve never had to go through that. Sad and helpless because I can’t do much to help and to see people going through that is always suprising and shocking.
I think as a class we could help raise awareness. We could also do fundraisers to help get them more help. Also we could make care packages for them with like socks and toothbrushes things they need for day to day. We have so much that we should gladly give up a little to those who just lost everything. Even the little things make a difference.

2) Pakistan is haveing really bad floods in there city. It flooded the main street. the USA was trying to drive there and droop off food but could not. One ninth of their population is homeless. along with not haveing much food they also have no clean water. there is also over 1,500 people are dead.
3) what surprise me the most is all the deaths that are happning. i did not no about the floods till this class. it makes me fell sad for this peolpe. it makes me feel more thankfull for what i have. it makes me feel like we need to help them the best we can.
4) we could have a food drive for them. stundents could donat moeny. and then we could tell grayslake central to do the same. then we seed it all to them and they would be very happy. i think this would be the right thing to do because we would want the same done for us.
